Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
GEO & AI Search Glossary: 40+ Terms Defined (2026)
Plain-English definitions of the terms shaping the citation economy. Part of our Citation Economy field guide.
Core concepts
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — Earning your brand a cited, recommended place inside AI-generated answers (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude), rather than only ranking in the traditional results list. The umbrella term for the discipline.
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — The narrower craft of structuring content so it can be returned as a clean, direct answer (featured-snippet lineage). A component of GEO. See AEO vs GEO.
LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) / AI SEO — Catch-all labels that largely overlap with GEO.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) — Improving a page's visibility in the traditional ranked results list. The foundation GEO builds on. See GEO vs SEO.
Citation economy — Our term for the emerging model where visibility is allocated by who gets quoted in AI answers, not who ranks. Visibility becomes earned, not rented.
Engines & surfaces
AI Overview (AIO) — Google's AI-generated answer at the top of search results, above the blue links.
Google AI Mode — Google's fuller conversational AI search experience; draws from far more domains than AI Overviews.
Answer engine — Any AI system that returns a synthesized answer with sources (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, AI Overviews).
LLM (Large Language Model) — The AI model behind an assistant. Note the consumer/builder split: people ask a few (ChatGPT, Gemini…), while developers build on others (DeepSeek, Qwen…). See Which LLMs Do People Ask?.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) — When an AI retrieves live sources at answer-time and composes a response from them; the mechanism behind most citations.
Metrics
Citation — A source an AI answer credits or links. The unit of value in GEO.
Citation share of voice — How often your brand is cited vs. competitors for your target questions. The headline GEO metric.
Citation lift — The before/after change in your citations after you engage — the proof the work moved the needle.
Prompt coverage — How many of your priority questions surface your brand at all.
Zero-click search — A search that ends without a click because the answer was delivered on the page. See The End of the Click.
Share of model / source mix — The breakdown of which source types (Reddit, YouTube, reviews, owned…) an engine cites.
Tactics & assets
Prompt map — The GEO equivalent of a keyword map: the set of real questions buyers ask AI, by intent.
Answer object — A self-contained, factual, clearly-structured chunk of content (a stat, a direct answer) built to be extracted and quoted by AI.
Entity consistency — Keeping your brand's name, category, and facts aligned across the web so AI describes you accurately.
Corroboration — Multiple trusted sources agreeing about you; the GEO equivalent of the trust backlinks once signaled.
E-E-A-T — Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness; Google's quality framework, still relevant as AI-trust signals.
llms.txt — A proposed file standard telling AI crawlers how to access and use a site's content.
Digital PR / citation building — Earning mentions in trusted third-party sources AI cites (media, listicles, reviews).
Listicle inclusion — Getting your brand into "best-X" articles, which dominate commercial-query citations.
Channels AI cites
Community sources — Reddit, Quora, forums; heavily cited, especially by Perplexity and Google.
Review platforms — G2, Capterra, TrustRadius; a claimed profile with real reviews ≈3× B2B citation lift.
Owned content — Your own pages/docs, optimized as answer objects.
UGC (User-Generated Content) — Authentic content from real users; what AI craves and platforms pay to license.
Risks & ethics
Astroturfing — Fake, coordinated, undisclosed promotion (e.g., sock-puppet accounts). High ban/legal/reputation risk; the opposite of earned visibility.
Disclosure — Clearly stating a commercial connection when you participate; required by platform rules and regulators (FTC, ASA).
Model collapse (feedback-loop risk) — The danger that if AI reduces incentives to create content, the human content models train on degrades. See The End of the Click.
Hallucination — When an AI states something false — including about your brand; a reputation-management concern.
