Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
How to Get Cited in AI Answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity & Google AI) in 2026
Short answer: You get cited by being the genuinely most useful, clearly-structured, trustworthy answer in the places a given engine already looks — and by working each engine deliberately, because they reward different sources. You can't buy a citation and you can't fake one at scale. This is part of our Citation Economy field guide.
Step 1 — Map prompts, not keywords
Start from the real questions your buyers ask, across the funnel: definition ("what is X"), comparison ("best X for Y"), experiential ("what do people actually use"), and reputation ("is [brand] good"). Each question is a citation opportunity, and — crucially — each type is won on a different surface (more below).
Step 2 — Match the surface to the question
This is the step most "AI visibility" effort gets wrong. From our analysis:
| Question type | Where the citation lives | Your move |
|---|---|---|
| Experiential / opinion | Reddit, Quora, communities | Be the helpful, disclosed voice in the live thread |
| Commercial / "best-X" | Listicles, G2/Capterra, owned comparison pages | Earn inclusion + publish your own answer-shaped page |
| How-to / educational | YouTube, docs, structured guides | Publish a clear, transcribed, structured answer |
| Reputation | Reviews, Reddit, owned proof | Collect real reviews; show evidence |
Step 3 — Work the engines deliberately
There is no "AI" — there are AIs, and only ~11% of cited domains overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity. Practical implications:
- Perplexity & Google AI Overviews are Reddit/community-heavy and (Perplexity) bias to fresh content — community engagement pays off fastest here.
- ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude lean on Wikipedia, media, review sites and clearly-structured owned content — earn corroboration, not just community posts.
- Copilot is commerce-and-Bing-led; Grok privileges social (X, Reddit).
Step 4 — Be the best answer (the part that actually earns it)
Popularity doesn't get you cited — clarity and trust do. The YouTube data makes this vivid: subscriber and view counts have ~zero correlation with citations; 41% of AI-cited videos have under 1,000 views. What works everywhere:
- Lead with a direct, factual answer; drop the salesy tone (it actively hurts).
- Structure for extraction: clear question-shaped headings, short answer up top, evidence below.
- Add specifics — a number, a comparison, a real experience — not generic advice.
Step 5 — Earn corroboration off-site
Consistent entity details across the web, real customer reviews on G2/Capterra (a profile with genuine reviews roughly triples citation probability for B2B), credible third-party mentions, and authentic community discussion. AI trusts what multiple trusted sources agree on.
Step 6 — Publish where citations live (no audience required)
A question-titled, well-transcribed YouTube video or a substantive LinkedIn post can get cited with zero followers. The model reads the words, not your subscriber count.
What NOT to do
- No stealth or fake accounts. Astroturfing carries ban, legal and reputation risk — and it's the opposite of earned.
- Don't spam one reply across threads. Relevance is the whole game.
- Don't optimize for one engine and assume the rest follow. They won't.
Then: prove it
Engaging isn't the finish line — getting cited is. Baseline your citation share of voice, re-measure on a schedule, and watch for lift. See How to Measure AI Visibility and the full picture in The Citation Economy.
needlz.ai helps brands earn citations in AI answers — and proves the lift. Earned, never rented.
