Which Sources Does AI Cite? The 2026 Channel Map (by Engine)

needlz.aiÚltima atualização em 21 de junho de 2026

Short answer: Across AI engines, the heavy hitters are Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, review sites (G2/Capterra), LinkedIn and established media — but the mix changes dramatically by engine. There is no universal "AI source list." This is part of our Citation Economy field guide.

The big picture: communities and reference content win

On Google's AI surfaces, communities dominate the citation mix:

Where Google's AI answer looks

Reddit (21%), YouTube (19%), Quora (14%) and LinkedIn (13%) lead Google AI Overviews. Across engines combined, Reddit is frequently the #1 external source and YouTube the single most-cited domain. The platforms are paying for it: Google ~$60M/yr and OpenAI ~$70M/yr to license Reddit content.

But every engine has a different fingerprint

This is the part that matters. Only ~11% of cited domains overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity.

How much each AI engine leans on Reddit

Engine Leans hardest on
Perplexity Reddit (~47%), LinkedIn & G2 (B2B), fresh content
ChatGPT Wikipedia (41%), Reddit (35%), G2, media
Gemini Reddit (~27.5%), YouTube, Wikipedia
Google AI Overviews Reddit, YouTube, Quora, LinkedIn (community-led)
Copilot Amazon, Walmart, Wikipedia (commerce/Bing-led)
Grok X and Reddit (social-led)
Claude Editorial, LinkedIn long-form, documentation

It also depends on the question

Source mix flips by intent. Commercial "best-X" answers lean on listicles, review sites and owned comparison content; experiential "what do people use" answers lean on Reddit and communities; how-to answers lean on YouTube and docs. (See How to Get Cited.)

And by language and country

Source mix is also language-driven — Google AI Overviews source ~85% in the prompt's local language; Grok closer to ~52%. Chinese engines use a separate ecosystem entirely. (See GEO by Language & Country.)

What this means for you

  • Don't chase one source. Build presence across the channels your buyers' engines actually cite.
  • Don't chase one engine. Win Perplexity/Google with community work; win ChatGPT/Gemini/Claude with corroboration and structured owned content.
  • Measure the mix — knowing which sources feed your buyers' answers tells you where to invest.
